Premier’s Visioning

Challenge

It was to be his last term in office, and he wanted to leave a behind a roadmap – a vision for the future.  The premier of the NWT wanted to leave behind a vision created jointly by all northern leaders and the people they serve. The premier and members of the Northern Leaders’ Forum agreed to consult with their constituents about their vision for the future, and then come together to identify a common way forward.

In the summer of 2011, the premier’s office contacted Tait Communications to facilitate a visioning process with the people of the Northwest Territories.

Solution

The premier hosted focus groups throughout the NWT, facilitated by Tait Communications. Focus groups were held with constituents and with interested groups including media, not-for-profit organizations, community leaders, and youth. The feedback from these meetings was combined with submissions provided in writing and on-line by territorial groups and individuals.

In the fall of 2011, the premier gathered the members of the Northern Leaders’ Forum to discuss what they had heard from their respective constituents, and to identify themes of a common vision of the future. Tait Communications facilitated this vision-building meeting.

Results

Working together, through a facilitated process, the northern leaders used input from the people of the Northwest Territories to agree on a common vision for the NWT in the next 30 years.
