GNWT Department of Environment & Natural Resources:
Traditional Knowledge Annual Report 2009–10
Challenge
Aboriginal traditional knowledge is an essential source of information about the natural environment and the use of its resources, and the relationship of people to the land and to each other. Recognizing this, the Government of the Northwest Territories established an Interdepartmental Traditional Knowledge Working Group in 2009 to co-ordinate the government’s traditional knowledge initiatives. Led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Working Group needed a way to record and share the GNWT’s integration and use of Traditional Knowledge.
Solution
Tait Communications created the 2009/10 Traditional Knowledge Annual Report. We interviewed government employees to research, write and edit a report profiling the unique ways each department uses Traditional Knowledge. Individual departmental reports were woven into a visually rich summary that highlights the government’s use of traditional knowledge in its day-to-day operations. Each department’s efforts also featured a vignette of traditional knowledge in action.
